Default Nadia: 11-Year-Old Girl Missing From Winter Springs

11-Year-Old Girl Missing From Winter Springs
    April 9, 2010

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. -- Members of the Winter Springs Police Department were out Friday night in search of a missing 11-year-old girl.

Police Chief Kevin Brunelle said the girl, named Nadia, was last seen riding her bike in the Barrington Estates area of Winter Springs.

The police department said it received a call that the girl was missing on Friday just before 4:30 p.m.

Police said there was no sign of foul play, but family told them that it's not like Nadia to not tell anyone that she would be coming home late.

Brunelle said a reverse 911 call made in the area yielded negative results. He said officers were about to start a grid search of a nearby wooded area.

The girl is described as a white female, about 5 feet tall and weighing 85 pounds.

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. -- Members of the Winter Springs Police Department were out Friday night in search of a missing 11-year-old girl.

Police Chief Kevin Brunelle said Nadia Morgan Bloom was last seen riding her bike in the Barrington Estates area.

The police department said it received a call that the girl was missing on Friday just before 4:30 p.m.

Police said there was no sign of foul play, but family members told them that it's not like Nadia to not tell anyone that she would be coming home late.

Brunelle said a reverse 911 call made in the area yielded negative results. He said officers were doing a grid search of a nearby wooded area Friday night.

Officers said they found the girl's bike upright and in good condition, with the kick stand down. The girl was not seen.

Police said they believe Nadia got off her bike, wandered into the woods and became disoriented.

She is described as a white female, about 5 feet tall and weighing 85 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing an orange T-shirt and blue shorts and carrying a black backpack with a horse on it.

Family members said the girl has autism and requires medication that she does not have with her.

WESH 2's Kendra Oestreich was at the scene and said a large search effort is currently under way.

    Police Search For Missing Girl
    April 10, 2010

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. -- Winter Springs police continue to search for an 11-year-old girl, who was reported missing at 4:20 p.m. Friday.

Nadia Bloom was last seen in the Barrington Estates subdivision near state Roads 434 and 417. Local 6 News helicopter Sky 6 captured video of divers searching a large pond behind the neighborhood Saturday morning.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Florida Department of Law Enforcement tip line at 866-282-0672.

A Seminole County sheriff's helicopter with infrared technology, as well as K-9 units, were involved in the search. Police were also conducting a "grid search" of the woods to try and find Bloom.

Police told Local 6 the search is focused on the wooded area, because Bloom's bicycle was discovered at the end of a cul-de-sac on her street. Police said on Friday that foul play was not suspected. Police said Bloom may have gone to play or hide in the wooded area.

Bloom's mother called police after she noticed her daughter was missing. The child's grandfather spoke with Local 6 late Friday, and said the family is holding out hope.

Police described Bloom as white, about 5 feet tall and 85 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing an orange T-shirt and blue shorts. She was carrying a black backpack with a horse on it.

Police said the girl has autism and does not have her required medication with her now.

After news of the search aired, George and Cindy Anthony arrived at the scene. The parents of Casey Anthony told Local 6 they wanted to go talk to Bloom's parents, and then planned to leave.

Divers Search For Missing Girl, 11
    Saturday, April 10, 2010 5:12:45 PM

The search for missing 11-year-old girl from Winter Springs is being scaled back.

Nadia Bloom hasn't been seen since Friday afternoon. That's when her bike was found near the woods in her gated Barrington Estates subdivision off state Road 434.

Investigators are using smaller groups to go out and search smaller areas. They are narrowing down that area into 5 or 6 even smaller sections with 4 or 5 people, each with their own search dog.

Those dogs have led officers around all Saturday morning, but so far nothing has panned out.

"We haven't located any information to include nothing from Nadia's personal belongings or anything like that. It's very discouraging to me anytime that we go and go and every hour that passes we’re not finding anything, anything at all,” said Chief Kevin Brunelle, Winter Springs Police Department.

Search efforts went until 2 a.m. Saturday, and resumed again at daylight Saturday.

Authorities have sent an e-mail with Nadia’s picture to thousands of neighbors, as well as distributed paper fliers around the community.

Police said they did not suspect foul play, and believe Nadia is still somewhere in the woods, but wanted everyone to know what she looks like in case she’s somewhere else.

Chief Brunelle said Nadia’s family found her bike Friday afternoon with the “kickstand up, helmet hanging on the handle bars. No indication of any struggle.”

Police said they are concentrating their efforts on a 5- to 10-acre section of the Black Hammock Woods, a dense marshy area where they said it is tough to see more than a few feet ahead at times.

“We have divers in the ponds, seeing if they can find anything,” Brunelle said. “We have to eliminate it. We don’t know anything, but we have to eliminate it as a possibility.”

As many as 150 officers and trained volunteers searched on ATVs and airboats, mindful of signs warning them to beware of alligators earlier Saturday.

“It just pulls on my heart strings, because I have three kids, and I know she’s scared,” said Danny Ibison, with Florida-3 Airboat Search and Rescue.

“We’ve learned some stuff about Nadia that we are very happy to hear,” Brunelle said. “She’s an 11-year-old young lady, and she don’t like to get dirty. So we don’t believe she’s going into, circumvent that mud -- and let me tell you: There’s a lot of mud out there.”

As the search entered its second day, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement deployed its Child Abduction Response Team, and police paid a visit to all sex offenders in the area.

Even though there was no evidence to support that Nadia was abducted, the problem is there has been no evidence at all of what happened to her.

“Right now there are no leads,” Brunelle. “We have one thing: A child that’s missing.”

Police distributed missing posters with Nadia’s photo at area businesses, hoping that if she comes out of the woods -- where rescuers aren’t -- she will be met by a friendly face.

“Hopefully she’ll find her way, or find someone who will guide her back to her family,” said Tabitha Miller, a Winter Springs resident. “Pray for strength for her family.”

The police chief said the parents have been holding up rather well. They have their pastor and family with them, and have cooperated fully with the investigation.

Teams Continue Search For Missing 11-Year-Old
    April 10, 2010

Multiple agencies and more than 150 volunteers continued searching for an 11-year-old girl missing from Winter Springs Saturday afternoon.

Search and rescue teams will cover up to 10 acres from the Barrington Estates subdivision, where Nadia Morgan Bloom was last seen riding her bike, all the way back to Lake Jesup.

Nadia's family members said she's autistic, and she requires medication. She was last seen Friday afternoon.

Police said Nadia went for a bike ride at about 3:30 p.m. About an hour later, her mother frantically called police after the 11-year-old's bicycle was found upright, with the kick stand down and her helmet on the handlebars in a cul-de-sac at the end of Wrentham Court.

Winter Springs Police Department Chief Kevin Brunelle said they have no reason to believe Nadia was abducted.

"Everything we have leads us to a search and rescue, not foul play," he said.

He said his team, along with the Seminole County divers, Florida Airboat Search and Rescue and a number of other agencies, are treating Nadia's disappearance as a missing persons case.

"Best case scenario, she walks out of the woods and we find her and everything is fine," Brunelle said. "Obviously that is what we are looking for, and I'm not prepared to talk about worst-case scenario right now. I want to stay positive."

Nadia's parents were with family members and their pastor on Saturday. Neighbors were outside in the community watching and waiting for Nadia's safe return as crews combed over areas organized in grids.

"Well, everybody is waiting around to see if there is anything we can do," said neighbor Steve Glazier. "It's frustrating. You want to help and do something. We go in and wander out hoping we get some news."

The police chief said he's happy to know that Nadia does not like to get dirty, and he does not believe she went into the deep mud. He said he believes that her autism would make her averse to water, as well.

Nadia's grandfather told WESH 2 a little more about his granddaughter and called her "intelligent."

"She is very inquisitive," Jim Bloom said. "I am proud to be her grandfather, very blessed to be her grandfather."

I'm surprised that LE is "assuming" that there is no foul play because her bike and helmet were found intact. I could see if they said "possibility" of no foul play, but to assume she isn't in other danger in this day and age? Also surprised that they waited 2 days to canvas the RSO's in the neighborhood. George and Cindy showing up? Weird.

From what I read, they were certain she was "just curious" and went into the woods. I wouldn't assume that either. I'd have been canvassing the neighborhood immediately.
